Back Pain and Sciatica

Pain down your leg like electricity. A back that won't let you sit.

You stand up from the desk and your lower back grabs, the leg burns on the drive home, and at 3am you're awake again. A short assessment comes first, then a licensed Australian practitioner goes through the pain and everything you've tried.

When your back and leg hurt the most

Getting out of the car.

Getting out of the car.
The first step after a long drive, when your lower back won't let you straighten up.

Getting through the night.

Getting through the night.
Rolling over wakes you. Then you lie there working out which side hurts least.

Pain down one leg.

Pain down one leg.
Burning pain from the buttock down into the leg. Some days the whole leg feels heavy.

The things you stopped doing.

The things you stopped doing.
Golf, tennis, the run, the gym. On hold "for a while". That was two years ago.
It settles. You trust it again. Then it comes back. You've probably done the sensible things: physio, rest, stretches, a chiro, a scan. Each may have helped for a few months. Then you bend to tie a shoe and there it is, and every appointment feels like starting again.

Sound familiar?

  • It hurts to sit, hurts to stand, hurts to lie down
  • Pain that shoots down one leg, sometimes with tingling
  • A jolt in your lower back when you stand up from a chair
  • Socks, shoes and the seatbelt all take real care
  • Stairs are hard, and going down is harder
  • Waking most nights and not getting back to sleep
  • Planning drives and meetings around when it will hurt

You shouldn't have to explain it all from scratch again. Your consultation with an FX practitioner starts with your back as it is today and everything you've tried.

Start with where the pain travels and what sets it off

In your consultation, your practitioner asks about the pain: where it sits, where it travels, what sets it off, what it's stopped you doing. Then they go through your history: how long it has lasted, what you've tried, what helped and for how long. Your plan is built from all of it. If you need to be seen in person, you'll be told.

Your plan may focus on:

The pain itself

Where it starts, where it travels and what triggers it: sitting, standing, bending or getting up in the morning.

Sleep, sitting and driving

How your back copes with a workday, a long drive and a night in bed, and practical changes for each.

Movement and strength

Exercise or rehab built around your working week and the things you want to get back to.

When the relief didn't last

What earlier care helped with, how long it lasted and whether testing or a referral makes sense.

Individual results vary. No outcome or recovery time can be promised.
When it flares again after a good stretchShort-term relief is real, and it matters. Then the same pain comes back, down the same leg, at the same moments. The practitioner goes through everything you've tried, in one place.

Your personalised plan may include:

  • Changes for sitting, driving, lifting and sleeping
  • Exercise or rehab support for your back
  • Lifestyle guidance for work and home
  • Further testing or referral where needed
  • Follow-up reviews as things change
  • Treatment, if it's suitable for you
What your practitioner will ask about your backBefore recommending anything, the practitioner wants the full picture, not just today's pain:
  • Where the pain is, where it travels and what it feels like
  • What sets it off: sitting, bending, mornings, nights
  • How long it has lasted and whether it comes and goes
  • What you've tried, what helped and how long the help lasted
  • MRI or scan reports and letters from other clinicians
  • Medical history and any warning signs that need urgent care
  • What you want back: sleep, a full workday, the golf course

Treatment is only recommended when the potential benefits are considered appropriate against the risks.
