Knee Pain and Injury

Stairs going down. Swelling after a walk. A knee you can't trust.

A sharp jolt mid-stride for no clear reason, an ache under the kneecap after a day on your feet, a knee that gives way when you put weight on it. A short assessment comes first, then a practitioner consultation about that pain and what you've tried.

The moments your knee lets you down

The stairs going down.

The stairs going down.
Each step down jars it. You grip the rail and lead with the good leg.

The swelling afterwards.

The swelling afterwards.
A walk you used to do easily, then a puffy, stiff knee and an ice pack on the couch.

The jolt out of nowhere.

The jolt out of nowhere.
Walking normally, then a sharp jolt. Or the knee gives way and you catch yourself.

The things you've quietly stopped.

The things you've quietly stopped.
Netball, the run, the hike with friends. Kneeling to a low cupboard. All stopped "for now".
When every outing gets planned around your kneeIt might have started with an old netball or footy injury, or with nothing you can point to. Now you think about the knee before you say yes to anything. Maybe you've been told different things, or to see how it goes.

Sound familiar?

  • A sharp jolt in the knee mid-step, for no clear reason
  • Pain under the kneecap after standing or a long walk
  • Sitting out the walk with friends or paying for it later
  • A knee that catches, gives way or can't be trusted
  • Swelling and stiffness the night after activity
  • Kneeling and squatting hurt, so you avoid them
  • Choosing the lift over the stairs at work

You shouldn't have to retell it. Your consultation with an FX practitioner starts with your knee as it is now and everything you've already tried.

Start with where it hurts and when it hits

Tell us where it hurts: under the kneecap, behind the knee, down the inside. Tell us when: the first steps out of bed, the stairs down, the end of a day on your feet. Tell us what it has taken: the walk with friends, netball, stairs without thinking. In your consultation, the practitioner goes through it with any scans and what you've tried, then sets out a next step. That may include rehab, imaging or a referral.

Your plan may focus on:

Stairs and getting up

Going down steps, getting up from a low chair or out of the car, and kneeling or squatting at home or work.

Swelling and stiffness

How the knee reacts after a walk, a long shift on your feet or a session, and how to plan activity around it.

When it catches or gives way

Rehab or exercise for strength and control, and advice for putting weight on the knee.

The activities you want back

The gym, the run, a full day out on your feet. Your goals shape the plan.

Individual results vary. No outcome or timeline can be promised, and any treatment depends on practitioner assessment.
It settles. You think it's done. Then it's back. You may have had physio that helped until it didn't, rest that settled it for a while, a brace that took the edge off. It's all useful history. The practitioner reviews what you've tried and been told, in one place.

Your personalised plan may include:

  • Activity advice for stairs, standing and work
  • Exercise or rehab built around your knee
  • Lifestyle guidance for work and home
  • Imaging or an in-person referral where needed
  • Follow-up reviews to see how the knee is going
  • Treatment, if it's suitable for you
What your practitioner will ask about your kneeBefore anything is recommended, the practitioner wants the full picture of your knee:
  • Where it hurts: kneecap, behind the knee, inside or out
  • When it hits: stairs, standing up, after a walk, at night
  • Whether it swells, locks, catches or gives way
  • How it started: an old injury, a fall or no clear cause
  • What you've tried, what helped and what stopped helping
  • MRI, X-ray or ultrasound reports and specialist opinions
  • Your health history and what you want back

Treatment is only recommended when the potential benefits are considered appropriate against the risks.
