Shoulder and Elbow Pain

An arm that wakes you at 3am and hits a hard stop when you reach.

You sleep propped up because lying flat hurts, and the elbow flares every time you grip a mug. A short assessment comes first, then a practitioner consultation that goes through your pain and everything you've tried.

What your arm has stopped you doing

A full night in your own bed.

A full night in your own bed.
Instead: the recliner at 3am, because rolling over wakes you.

Dressing without a workaround.

Dressing without a workaround.
A bra, a coat sleeve, a hairbrush. Small jobs that now end in a sharp catch.

A grip you now think twice about.

A grip you now think twice about.
A mug, the kettle, a drill, the shopping. Each one makes the elbow flare.

Trusting your arm to hold.

Trusting your arm to hold.
Every lift or reach starts with a test, in case the arm goes heavy and dead or gives out.
Aching at night, stuck at the top shelf, burning when you gripIt might be a deep ache in the shoulder that gets worse at night, or a burning pain on the outside of the elbow every time you grip. You rested it, did the exercises, had it looked at. It eased. Then it came back.

Sound familiar?

  • Waking every time you roll onto the sore shoulder
  • Lying awake because no position is comfortable
  • A hard stop when you reach for the top shelf or seatbelt
  • Sharp pain reaching behind you or overhead
  • Elbow pain that flares when you grip, twist or carry
  • An ache that runs from the shoulder into the upper arm
  • A few good weeks, then the same pain again

After a short assessment, your consultation with an FX practitioner starts with the arm as it is now, so you're not retelling it from scratch.

Start with where it hurts and what it stops you doing

You've probably done the sensible things already. In your consultation, the practitioner starts with the pain itself: where it sits, what sets it off, how it behaves at night and which everyday tasks it's taken from you. Then they look at everything you've tried and been told, and set out a next step, with the reasons. That may be a change to your rehab, more tests, treatment or a referral.

Your consultation covers:

Where it hurts and when

Night pain, reaching up or behind you, the burning on the outside of the elbow. What sets it off and what eases it.

What it has taken from you

Sleeping, getting dressed, carrying the shopping, gripping a tool, swimming or gym class.

Everything you've tried

Physio, exercises, braces, scans and any other care. What helped, and for how long.

What your arm has to do each day

Typing all day, lifting at work, caring for others. The things you can't stop doing.

Results vary between individuals. No particular recovery time or outcome can be promised.
When the good weeks keep running outRest may have taken the edge off, and physio may have got you most of the way. Then one long day or a heavy lift, and the pain was back. The practitioner looks at everything you've tried and been told, in one place.

Your personalised plan may include:

  • Changes to sleep position, workload and daily tasks
  • Exercise or rehab suited to your shoulder or elbow
  • Lifestyle guidance for work and home
  • Further testing, imaging or an in-person referral
  • Ongoing reviews, adjusted as things change
  • Treatment, if it's suitable for you
What your practitioner will ask about your shoulder or elbowBefore anything is recommended, the practitioner wants the full picture:
  • Where it hurts and whether it aches, burns or catches
  • When it hits: at night, reaching up, gripping or lifting
  • How it started, including any fall or sudden jolt
  • What you've tried, how long it helped, what happened next
  • Scans, reports and letters from previous appointments
  • Your work, caring role and medical history
  • Warning signs that need an in-person exam or urgent care

Treatment is only recommended when the potential benefits are considered appropriate against the risks.
